Noah Scovell papers, 1783-1819.

Business and family correspondence and financial records of a Saybrook, Connecticut, merchant and ship captain. The collection contains ships' papers, some in French, for such vessels as the brigs Dolphin and Friendship, the ship Patty & Julia, and the schooner Fairplay. Scovell and his son, Noah, Jr., traded along the Eastern seaboard and in the West Indies.

Noah Scovell (alternately spelled "Scoville" or "Scovil") was born in Saybrook, Connecticut (now Essex), around 1759, the son of Noah Scovell (1732-1782) and Anna (or Hannah) Pratt (ca. 1732-1815). He and his wife, Desire Pratt (ca. 1759-1819), had five children: Noah (1781-1833), Louis (1783-1806), Seabury or Sebra (b. 1785), Amos (b. 1787), and Maria (1789-1834).
